Bruins' Chara plays despite reported broken jaw

Image
BOSTON -- The crowd at TD Garden chanted Zdeno Chara's name as he took the ice before the national anthem. Then the arena erupted when Boston's captain was introduced in the starting lineup. The Bruins didn't know what they'd get out of the 42-year-old defenseman, who made the decision to play less than 72 hours after reportedly breaking his jaw, but his presence alone gave the Bruins a lift. "He was medically cleared with some warnings," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. "Made the decision to play. Inspirational for us. Good player for us. We knew he wouldn't be 100 percent, so we were happy to have him." Chara played 16 minutes, 42 seconds in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night, made four hits, three blocks and took two shots on goal. It ended up as a 2-1 win by the Blues that gave St. Louis a 3-2 series win and a chance to clinch their first Stanley Cup on Sunday at home. "He leads the team and everybody follows,...

Black Mirror season 5 review: As good as it gets

Image
Black Mirror's  fifth and latest season is out on  Netflix  on Wednesday, and with it comes something special. Like the outstanding USS Callister from season 4, new episode Striking Vipers is another stroke of brilliance from writer Charlie Brooker, who continues to deliver groundbreaking stuff despite the anthology's increasingly familiar tech-gone-wrong formula. With a reduced number of episodes compared to previous seasons, not one story drops in quality. You may have heard that one of those episodes stars Miley Cyrus, who brings star power like never before to classically twisted Black Mirror fare. Let's take a quick look at each episode with as few spoilers as possible. Striking Vipers Black Mirror episodes seem to fall into two categories: the big flashier episodes of its Netflix era (its earlier seasons first aired on Channel 4 in the UK) and the introspective quieter episodes that focus on relationships. Striking Vipers balances a mixture of both....

Anthony Joshua Upset by Andy Ruiz Jr. in Stunning Seventh-Round Knockout

Image
Andy Ruiz Jr. pulled off a spectacular upset on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, defeating Anthony Joshua, the previously unbeaten heavyweight world champion, by technical knockout after the referee stopped the fight in the seventh round. No one had given Ruiz, a doughy Mexican fighter, a chance against Joshua, a chiseled, ascendant British star who had been fighting in front of crowds of 90,000 fans in Britain. But Ruiz stunned Joshua with furious punching flurries that left him stumbling and, at several points, on the canvas. The largely pro-Joshua crowd had gone from thrilled to stunned by the time the fight was over. The upset had echoes of Buster Douglas’s shocking upset of Mike Tyson nearly 30 years ago. Joshua scored the first knockdown with a crisp left hand in the third round. But from then on Ruiz delivered most of the damaging blows. After getting off the canvas in the third round, Ruiz knocked down Joshua twice, starting with left hooks that led to relentle...

Virginia Beach Shooting: 12 Killed in Rampage at Municipal Center

Image
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A municipal building in Virginia Beach, Va., was turned into a scene of carnage on Friday afternoon after a longtime public utilities employee began firing indiscriminately at his co-workers with a handgun, the authorities said, killing a dozen people and injuring several others before dying after an extended shootout with the police. It had been nearing closing time in an office offering some of the most mundane functions of city government, such as paying water bills and applying for building permits, when the employee began stalking through several floors firing at his colleagues, the authorities said. The loud bursts of gunfire sent workers scrambling and barricading their office doors. Zand Bakhtiari, 28, who works on the first floor of the city building where the shooting happened, looked out his window about 4 p.m. and saw people screaming and running. “I thought they were running to the scene of a bad car accident,” he said in a telephone inter...
